Powderham is delighted to host a vibrant charity fun run in support of Parkinson’s UK, organised by local fundraisers Karen, Jayne, and Ruth. This family-friendly event invites participants to don their best bunny costumes, Easter bonnets, or blue attire – the official colour marking World Parkinson’s Day – to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s research and support.
Event Details:
- Date: Sunday 13th April 2025
- Location: Powderham Castle, Kenton, Devon, EX6 8JQ
- Distances: 1.5km for children (U12s), 3.5km for adults
The children’s race will be led by Arlo, the beloved Powderham goat, who promises to set the pace (provided he doesn’t get too distracted by the hedges along the way)! To get everyone warmed up and ready to go, the energetic Mrs. Sparkle will conduct a fun-filled warm-up session before the races commence.
This fun run marks the second of three fundraising events organised by Karen, Jayne, and Ruth this year, serving as preparation for their ambitious 160-mile trek across the Outer Hebrides in June. Their previous event, a quiz night held in February, successfully raised £1,500 for Parkinson’s UK.
Ruth’s personal connection to the cause adds a heartfelt dimension to the initiative. Her husband, Mark, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2021. Ruth shares, “Mark’s symptoms began with unexpected freezing while walking and sudden falls. Despite these challenges, he has maintained his sense of humour and faced each obstacle with incredible courage. He is now unable to walk, which has been profoundly difficult for our family”
Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurological condition globally, with approximately 153,000 people living with the condition in the UK alone. Projections estimate this number will rise to 172,000 by 2030. Currently, there is no cure, underscoring the critical need for ongoing research and support.
Participants can look forward to a day filled with fun, community spirit, and the opportunity to explore the beautiful grounds of Powderham. Whether running, walking, or cheering from the sidelines, everyone is welcome to join in and make a difference.
