Start and Finish: Topsham Quay, Exeter | Total Distance: 5,240 Miles | Finish Date: 1st November
At 66 years old, most people are slowing down. Not Steve James.
The retired banker from Exeter, after a 40-year career in finance, has taken on one of the most extreme endurance challenges imaginable: running 200 marathons in 200 consecutive days, covering the entire coastline of mainland Britain. A staggering 5,240 miles.
Steve set off on 26th April 2025 from Topsham Quay, Exeter, and has now completed 180 marathons in 180 days, maintaining an unbroken streak that few on Earth have attempted.
His goal? To inspire people, especially those in later life, that age is no barrier to pushing your limits, and to raise funds for two incredible causes: Cancer Research UK and Exeter & Devon Scouts.
“I want to show that life after retirement can be the start of something amazing. This isn’t about beating records, it’s about breaking barriers,” says Steve.
The University of Exeter is closely monitoring Steve throughout his journey. Their researchers are studying how such prolonged, high-impact exertion affects his body mass, muscle composition, and overall physiology. The data could contribute to new understandings in sports science, aging, and long-distance endurance training.
Despite weather challenges, fatigue, injuries, and the sheer mental load of running a marathon (26.2 miles) every single day, Steve has pressed on. His secret? A disciplined routine, mental fortitude, and the support of a growing online community who follow his daily journey.
He’s been blogging every day of the challenge, sharing insights, stories, setbacks, and milestones across social media. You can follow his journey under the name "Banker on the Run"
Mark your calendars: Steve will complete his 200th and final marathon on Saturday, 1st November 2025, arriving back where it all began - Topsham Quay, Exeter. Supporters are encouraged to come down, cheer him on, or even join him for part of the final leg.
