As well as being one of the UK’s best known fishing ports, Brixham is also a prime tourist destination due to its location in the The town has a packed annual events programme with a whole host of varied and interesting celebrations and other events taking place throughout the year.
Being a fishing port, you can expect a great choice of seafood restaurants with loads of independent, local establishments offering extensive menus made up from the freshest local produce right from the bay. Not only is there are wide range of eateries but also several food festivals focusing on the seafood that the town is so proud of. Visitors can also spend time at Brixham’s historic Fish Market where tours take place showing off the history of the site. The town also has a museum and there are several organisations running tours of the coast so you can find out more about the maritime heritage of the town. Brixham is home to a replica of the Golden Hind, Sir Francis Drake’s flagship, which visitors can explore and find out more about time during the Tudor era. There are loads of events taking place all year around that celebrates this part of the town’s history, making it a great location for history lovers. Every September, the town hosts Fishstock, which often features some of the biggest chefs operating in the English Riviera. The event isn’t just a chance to taste amazing sea food and watch chefs do what they do best, there are also live music stages and plenty of heritage attractions for the children too.
Brixham has several annual events that are hugely popular and attract large crowds every year. Brixham Pirate Festival takes place over the early May Bank Holiday and usually includes dressing up with plenty of pirate themed activities to keep you entertained. Also in May is Brixfest. This event is a three day celebration of the town showing off live music, arts and crafts and a huge fire work display amongst other things. It’s a great event and a wonderful celebration for the whole family to take part in.
Another annual event is the Trawler Race which has been going on for over half a century. Taking place in June, the trawler race sees boats decorated with bunting and then raced around the bay while plenty of other festivities and celebrations take place in the harbour to raise money for local charities. Fans of sailing will want to make sure they’re in Brixham at the start of the summer for the Brixham Heritage Sailing Regatta.
There really is always something to do in Brixham, from activities run at the popular tourist attractions to festivals for food, music and the arts there is something to suit every taste and budget.
