Halloween in Devon

With wide sprawling moorland, an abundance of imposing properties and attractions galore, heading to Devon for Halloween is the perfect idea for anyone who wants some hair-raising fun at this time of year.

Devon is steeped in history and with all the folk stories that come from Dartmoor and Exmoor, you’re never too far from something that will make your hair stand on end. The infamous Hounds of the Baskervilles were said to actually haunt the moor and so-called scared Sir Arthur Conan Doyle so much during his stay he was inspired to write the mystery that Sherlock Holmes unravels. Many of our residents will be happy to share some spooky goings on with you, if you’re brave enough to ask!

While you can join a ghost tour or hear about the spectres supposedly haunting the many country houses and castles in the region all year around, these tours are much scarier during the Halloween period. While we can’t guarantee that the region’s ghosts will make an appearance, we can tell you that you will come away needing to keep the lights on for a couple of nights!

Whether you’re looking for a family friendly activity or something to amuse the adults in your party, you’ll find it here in Devon. Why not spend some time searching for ghosts in some of the area’s caves? Or try a night time walk around the grounds of one of the region’s spookiest houses? There are attractions, such as escape rooms that offer creepy challenges at this time of year to really test your nerve. Can you prove your courage and survive a few hours in one or would you rather try your hand at something a bit gentler? If that’s the case, Devon is known for its local produce, so you can always pick a few pumpkins or bob for apples as a way to get involved with the Halloween cheer.

For families, there are a whole host of events that tie in with half term such as events at The Milky Way or Crealy that are suitable for children of all ages and their parents. These events offer crafts and art workshops as well as costume parties, trails and challenges. Many of the events will last into the end of the half term holiday, so you can be sure to fit in more than one activity for Halloween.
