Great Torrington Mayfair 2019
The Great Torrington Mayfair is an annual festival dating from the 13th century. It comprises four days of festivity, frolics and fun. Below is a summary of the festivities: more details and updates can be found on the 'Great Torrington Mayfair & Carnival Committee' Facebook page.
·Wednesday 1st May - Rehearsals & Crowning of Carnival Queen
From 6pm in the Town Square: Rehearsal of maypole dancing and crowning of the May Queen to ensure everything goes smoothly on Mayfair day, followed by crowning of this year’s Carnival Queen.
·Thursday 2nd May - Mayfair Day
From 9am in the Town Square: Festivities start early with the Torrington Silver Band playing around the town. A United Open Air Service will then take place at 9:45 followed by English Country and Floral Dancing between 10 and 11am. At 12 noon the Proclamation of the Mayfair will take place in the Town Square followed by a Civic Parade and then the highlight of the day: the crowning of the May Queen and maypole dancing. There will be various other entertainments throughout the day in the Town Square.
·Friday 3rd May - Round The Tree Race
At 6:45pm in the Town Square: The Round The Tree Race is a gruelling run for anyone over 11 years old. It starts in the Town Square, goes down through Torrington Commons to Taddiport, round a tree (obviously) and then back up the Commons into the Town Square. Are you brave enough to have a go? Registration starts at 6pm.
·Saturday 4th May - Grand Carnival
From 6:15pm: This is the last of the festivities for Mayfair in Great Torrington: a spectacular Carnival which travels from the Old Bowling Green at the top of Limer's Hill through the length of the town and then back into the Town Square.
·Funfair: Accompanying all this, for the entire Mayfair week is Rowland's Funfair in Castle Hill Car Park, Castle Street, Torrington, EX38 8HB.
·Parking: throughout the Mayfair festivities, parking will be available in Sydney House Car Park, South Street, Torrington EX38 8AA.
