Bonfire Night in Devon

Overseas visitors might be a tad confused at the custom of Bon Fire Night and Firework Displays so naturally, here in Devon we need to make them as big as possible to really highlight how much we love this cultural event.

For anyone who is a little confused as to why we host large scale bon fires and firework displays, it all stems from the Gunpowder Plot where a group planned to blow up the houses of parliament and assassinate the king. After being foiled, the government at the time encouraged people to celebrate the fact that the king survived by lighting bonfires and the 5th November became a day of thanksgiving which evolved into the event we now know. Bon Fire events in and around Devon can be anything from small community gatherings to huge displays that involve massive fireworks and organisations donating guys which are often sponsored. Many of the Bon Fire events that take place are done to raise money for charity so you can be sure that attending one will mean that local good causes will benefit.

Having such a wide and diverse landscape makes Devon the perfect place to watch a fire work display, you can see them above water, over miles of untouched countryside or in city centres. In fact, Devon has a long history with fireworks and even hosts a fireworks championship in the summer, so you can be guaranteed some of the best displays in the country. One of the largest events in the region takes place in Plymouth Hoe where guests can watch the fire works exploding around the city’s most famous landmark.
