13th June 2022
Categories: Visitor News
This year’s National Picnic Week falls between 18th and 26th June, so what better excuse do you need to pack a bag and dine al fresco in the beautiful Devon scenery? To help you find the perfect spot for your picnics, we’ve put together a list of our favourite picnic sites across the county – don’t forget to let us know if you visit any of these places over National Picnic Week!
Knapp Copse Local Nature Reserve
This nature reserve is managed by East Devon District Council and has some wonderful views of the East Devon countryside. On a clear day, you can even see the sea at nearby Sidmouth!
Cockington
This chocolate box village on the outskirts of Torquay is always worth a visit, but if you fancy a picnic, make sure to head to Cockington Court, a manor house and a huge area of parkland within the village where you can enjoy some beautiful views while dining.
Plymouth Hoe
While you might be tempted by the range of eateries on offer in Plymouth, save those for another visit and spend some time at Plymouth Hoe. Surrounded by blue skies and sea views, Devil’s Point is a great spot.
Woolacombe Beach
If you don’t mind getting a little sand in your sandwiches, Woolacombe is great choice for a beachside picnic, especially as it is recognised as being Britain’s best beach. With miles of golden sand, surfers to watch and lifeguards on hand, it is a safe, pretty and enjoyable place to spend a few hours.
Cathedral Close Lawn
Located next to Exeter Cathedral, this little area of greenery is a peaceful haven in the midst of a bustling city and is perfect for those that love people watching.
Spatchwick Common
This spot on Dartmoor can be found along the banks of the River Dart and is a favourite with locals looking for some al freso dining. There are several areas on the banks of the river that can be used for picnics and once you’re done, there is a lovely footpath so you can enjoy an afternoon walk too.
