Suitcase Magazine has revealed their picks for the eight best ocean pools in Europe, with locations in Devon taking up two spots, the only areas of the UK to be included. The list features places in Portugal and Croatia, including the Tunnels Beaches in Ilfracombe and the Mermaid Pool on Burgh Island.
The Tunnels Beaches are one of Ilfracombe’s most historic and endearing landmarks, having been hand carved in the 1820s by Welsh miners, the tunnels lead you through two sheltered beaches and an ocean-fed sea pool and were created to protect Victorian sensitivities, allowing for men and women to bathe separately. Today, it is a premier wedding venue, providing a spectacular backdrop to your nuptials as well as an impressive atmosphere, so it is no wonder that it holds its grounds alongside places like Porto Moniz in Madeira.
Also on the list is Burgh Island Hotel’s Mermaid Pool is also on the list, which can be found on Burgh Island in South Devon, which is only accessible at low tide, or via one of the iconic sea tractors that can be caught from Bigbury on Sea. The island features an art deco style hotel which was the inspiration behind Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None.
