Dartmoor

Dartmoor is a great base for anyone looking for an active, outdoor holiday. The moor itself is full of wonderful places to explore on foot and there are a number of charming towns and villages all over the Dartmoor area, or just on the outskirts, with a wide variety of accommodation options.

In terms of great walking routes, the Two Moors Way is a good on, this one links north and south Devon together, with start and end points in Plymouth and Lynmouth. It has paths for both long distance and day walkers, there are waymarks all along the route so you can choose how far you want to go. The Two Moors Way showcases some of the best of Devon’s natural beauty with trails through the middle of both moors and the coast.

Another popular marked route is the Dartmoor Way, which is a good choice whatever your ability, with places ideal for hiking and areas that are gentler. Along the way you can see everything from tors, castles, gorges and open moorland.

South Devon

Home to the Torbay and the stunning seaside resorts of Salcombe and Dartmouth as well as the city of Plymouth, South Devon is understandably a popular destination for holiday makers, but did you know it is also a good base for anyone wanting a walking holiday?

We’ve already mentioned the Two Moors Way which has start and end points in Plymouth, giving you plenty of chances to explore the rural and coastal areas outside the city and moving into other areas of South Devon.

In South Devon you also have access to the South West Coast Path, England’s longest national trail which links Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and bits of Dorset. The South West Coast Path gives you access to some amazing beaches and coastal views and there are even remains from the county’s smuggling days.

East Devon

In East Devon, you can easily access the South West Coast Path from towns and villages like Beer, Sidmouth and Seaton. There are some lovely walks from Exmouth to Sidmouth and Seaton to Sidmouth and there are trails around the Jurassic Coast.

The East Devon Way is another waymarked trail that will take you through the heart of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is suitable for all ages. The trail is split into small trails and routes, so you can find the perfect walk for you – plus its dog friendly!

North Devon

Parts of the South West Coast Path take you around the stunning North Devon coast, one route will take you into Exmoor and the Valley of Rocks on the path to Combe Martin. There is a great circular route which will give you the chance to view them from every angle.

Another great route in this area is the Tarka Trail which runs in a 163 mile figure of 8 through some incredible countryside, making up the North Devon Biosphere Reserve. There are a variety of landscapes to explore across the route including wooded valley, rivers and moorland and being suitable for both bikes and feet, it is mostly level and traffic free.

The Tarka Trail can be easily accessed from Bideford and Barnstaple and being two of the larger towns in North Devon, there are lots of accommodation options to choose from.
