Categories: Visitor News
Did you know that 19th – 27th June is National Picnic Week? In Devon, we have a host of wonderful places to stop for a picnic while you’re out and about.
As always, the team behind National Picnic Week have provided all the hints and tips you need to have an enjoyable picnic with friends or family. Just remember to follow the current guidelines with regards to household mixing and social distancing.
If you want to enjoy National Picnic Week this year, here are some of our favourite spots for setting down a hamper and getting stuck in.
The Grand Western Canal
Located in Tiverton, the Grand Western Canal is a Nature Reserve with some wonderful canal walks and lots of places to stop for refreshments. Just past the carpark there are some picnic benches with a lovely view of the canal, should you want more than a blanket to sit on!
Cockington
Honestly, this village is worth a visit whether you’re planning to picnic or not! Just outside of Torquay, this village has cobbled streets and thatched rooves galore giving it a real old timey feel. In the village is Cockington Court, a manor house surrounded by a parkland, perfect for a picnic.
Berry Head
This Nature Reserve is one of Torbay’s most important sites for wildlife and plants. There are plenty of spots for picnics along the cliff top and there are lots of lovely walks, including to the Berry Head Lighthouse which is both the shortest and the highest lighthouse in Britain!
Whistlandpound Reservoir
This reservoir in North Devon can be found in South Molton and is one of the most peaceful spots in this part of the county. There are a number of nice spots to sit down for a picnic around the lake and some incredible views to enjoy.
Spitchwick
We can’t mention incredible views without talking about this spot. Set on the banks of the River Dart, this is one of Dartmoor’s most popular places for picnics and there is even free parking nearby!
