The Torbay region is hugely popular with families, couples and solo visitors alike. Not only is there an abundance of attractions, but there are also some beautiful views, plenty of top notch accommodation options and of course, all that fresh local seafood! One of the many draws of the region is its beautiful coastal walks, here are a few of our favourites to inspire you for a little coastal adventure on your next visit!
One of the region’s most popular attractions is Kents Cavern, a series of prehistoric cave systems within the Torbay’s UNESCO Global Geopark. The cavern itself allows you to step back into the stone age and while you’re there, you can spend some time exploring the beautiful Geopark in which it sits.
One of the things you can do within the park is the Geopark Coastal Walk where you can learn all about the Torbay and English Riviera’s local geology. The trail takes you around layers of 400 million year old limestone and beautiful seldom seen beaches. The trail starts and finishes at Kent’s Cavern, so you can either start or end your day with a visit!
This walk can be quite challenging in places, with steep sections, but all is marked as a public footpath.
Another great walk which is easily accessible from the Kent’s Cavern site, starts at Anstey’s Cove, which is opposite the caverns. By following this route, you can take in some amazing views of Babbacombe village, on the outskirts of Torquay and on a clear day, you can see all along the coast line.
Speaking of Antsey’s Cove, there is a wonderful circular walk to be enjoyed here too. This walk takes you through some woodland towards Meadfoot Beach offering views of Thatcher’s Rock, an island which is home to a variety of sea birds.

Of course, we can’t mention walks along the coast without talking about the South West Coast path. There are several popular towns and villages that sit along the path giving you easy access to the various routes around the Torbay. For instance, for those of you who fancy a challenge and want to make a day of it, head to Brixham and take the Kingswear to Brixham route where you can see some incredible views across the ocean and enjoy some refreshments at quaint tearooms and cafes along the way!
Alternatively, you can do the Brixham to Berry Head walk where you can enjoy the Berry Head nature Reserve as well as Shoalstone Pool and Breakwater Beach.
If you’re in the English Riviera, no doubt you will be keen to find out more about the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie who lived in the town. From Torquay you can join the Agatha Christie Mile, an easy, family friendly, heritage walk that takes in some of the important places from her life and work. The walk takes you to some of the well known areas around the town, including Torre Abbey and the Princess Gardens.
For a beachside walk, why not head to Paignton for the Broadsands to Churston Circular walk. Starting at Broadsands Beach in Paignton, you can follow the coast path along towards Churston Point towards Elberry Cove and spot the steam trains passing on their way to and from the railway at Dartmouth. The return journey takes you through Churston Golf Club before you end up back on the beach.
