Making a decision on which beaches in South Devon are our favourites is never an easy one, but here are five of our top beaches in the region.
As more and more restrictions are being lifted, we’ll be tempted to head to the coast to enjoy the warmer weather, so why not give some of these locations a visit?
Blackpool Sands
Sitting in a sheltered bay near Dartmouth in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this one had to be on the list, purely because it is one of the region’s Blue Flag award winning beaches. It is a great spot for anyone who likes watersports and has even been used as a wedding venue!
Dawlish Warren
Another Blue Flag award winning beach, this one’s size means that despite its popularity there is plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the sand and the nearby nature reserve. It’s the perfect spot for nature lovers, as the sand dunes and reserve offer shelter to a range of different animal species.
Bigbury on Sea
Home to the famous sea tractors, Bigbury on Sea is located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a great destination for families. The beach offers a safe, fun environment with shallow waters and dusty sand. At certain times of day you can even walk across to Burgh Island, which was the setting for one of Agatha Christie’s most famous novels.
Slapton Sands
Not only is this one of the most beautiful spots in South Devon, but its full of fascinating history and wildlife too. As well as being home to some of the UK’s rarest plantlife, it is also where a rehearsal for D Day took place during WWII. You can visit a monument to the event at the far end of the beach in Torcross.
Hope Cove Beach
Located near Salcombe and Kingsbridge, Hope Cove is made up of two beaches. It has some of the most beautiful scenery in the county, so it’s hardly surprising that it features so heavily on our Instagram and is used in so many TV programmes! During the summer, there are lifeguards on duty, so it’s a safe place to indulge in a bit of swimming or taking part in watersports.
