26th April 2021
Categories: Visitor News
Bike Week is an annual celebration that showcases cycling in its many forms and aims to inspire people all over the UK to get out on your bikes and enjoy the great outdoors. This year’s event takes place between 30th May and 5th June, so whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or you’ve only just removed your stabilisers, here are some of our favourite cycling routes around Devon.
The Tarka Trail
We can’t mention cycling in Devon without including the Tarka Trail! This route is perfect for cycling with children, it follows a series of disused railway lines and there is a whole section that is entirely off road, which is perfect for cycling safety. It is a really long route and parts of it takes in both Exmoor and Dartmoor, so you can choose where you start for a new adventure each time!
The Plym Valley Cycle Trail
Located near Plymouth, this seven mile off road cycle route follows a former railway with plenty of spots for you to hop on and off all along the route. If you’re travelling to use the cycle trail, there is a car park at Plymbridge Woods and you can start here and follow the trail all the way through to Dartmoor for a bracing ride.
The Granite Way
This 11 mile route takes you alongside a castle, a dam and a viaduct – so there is plenty to keep you entertained along the way. The route links Okehampton to Lydford and at certain times of year, you might be lucky enough to catch sight of steam trains making their way around the region too!
The Exe Estuary Trail
For a route that is completely free of traffic and level, take a look at this one – it is ideal for beginners or anyone who feels like they need somewhere gentle to help build their confidence. It starts off in Exeter and joins the Exe Estuary Trail which is on the National Cycle Network. It is a long route that takes you through several coastal towns and nature reserves, so there are plenty of places to stop for a picnic and a cheeky sunbathe.
