As more and more self catering properties are given the go ahead to reopen, you might be looking at inspiration for places to stay in Devon later in the year and into 2022. If you’ve always fancied a stay in a cottage by the sea or are looking for a rural retreat, there are plenty of options for you in Devon. Here are some suggestions to get you started.
When it comes to cottage holidays, Devon is the place to be. The cottages here are cosy, cute and there are a huge amount of options when it comes to coastal or rural sites, so whatever you’re looking for in your home from home.

For those of you who want to be within easy access of everything, you will want to find a cottage in the Mid Devon region, staying here will put you in an equal distance from the south coast, including the English Riviera and South Hams, Dartmoor and the coastline of North Devon. One option is a property from Alpine Park Cottages, an award winning complex of 11 modern lodge style cottages near Exeter giving you easy access to both Devon’s capital city and the Jurassic Coast of East Devon.
The cottages are stylish and comfortable with plenty of room to make yourself at home and your own parking space and patio area, so you can spend the warmer evenings outside and take yourself off on adventures, whenever you like. Alpine Park Cottages also have a cottage ideal for guests with limited mobility – making it a great choice for the whole family.
Depending on when you book your stay, there are several nearby attractions including Crealy Theme Park and Bicton Park, you can find out when individual attractions are opening by visiting their websites.
If you want to be closer to the stunning beaches in North Devon without venturing too far out of the mid-Devon region, Moorparks Holiday Cottages Winkleigh are a good option. They’re on the outskirts of Great Torrington, making it easy to head into North Devon and visit top places like Bideford and Westward Ho! while still being an accessible distance from the south, east and mid Devon regions. The cottages here have been converted from original farm buildings and sit within 12 acres of fields and farm animals with extensive views of the countryside. By booking a stay here, you can share your holiday with rare breed sheep, alpacas, chickens and ducks, which the little ones (and the big ones!) are welcome to feed. It’s a haven for those that love being outdoors with the Tarka Trail just up the road and with both Exmoor and Dartmoor visible from the grounds.

For those of you who are keen to stay in North Devon, Love North Devon is the company for you. Their large farm estate in the heart of the countryside boarders the Exmoor National Park giving you loads of room to roam and the chance to head to places like Lynton and Lynmouth and the famous Valley of the Rocks. This part of Devon is well known for being a haven for surfers and watersports enthusiasts, so why not grab your boards and book a cottage?
If you like the idea of being in East Devon and close to the Jurassic Coast, Higher Wiscombe is a good choice. The properties are within the heart of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to Beer, Sidmouth and Branscombe.
The cottages are all built from converted barns all with exposed beams and brickwork and are fully equipped. They have won multiple awards for sustainability and quality, so you can really have a guilt free stay.
Of course, being within the EAONB you have plenty of space to explore, go for walks, cycle rides and get back to nature or you can visit the nearby coastal towns, like Sidmouth and Seaton where you’ll find popular eateries and shops as well as top attractions like the Donkey Sanctuary and Beer Quarry Caves. Make sure to check for up to date opening times and any advanced ticket sales.

The Torbay has always been a popular destination for holiday makers and there are loads of holiday cottages available in the area giving you the opportunity to visit a host of famous towns including Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.
One option are the holiday cottages run by the Cary Arms just outside Torquay. These cottages are only a short walk from the main hotel and spa and some of them are dog friendly, so everyone can join in the fun! The cottages are comfortable and spacious, plus with the included TV, DVDs and other features, you can stay entertained whatever the weather.
Nearby on the Torbay/South Hams border you’ll find Jenny Wren Holidays, a group of cosy, well equipped chalet style bungalows, ideal for peaceful and quiet breaks. All the properties are within key attractions in Dartmouth and the English Riviera whilst also offering a peaceful escape from every day life. There are parking spaces giving you the chance to explore the wider area as well as easy access to several mainline train stations and the region’s bus network.
Nearby attractions include Paignton Zoo, Babbacombe Cliff Railway and the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company among others – so whether you’re looking for family fun or just something to while away the hours, you’ll find it here.

Further south near Totnes is Heron Cottage which has amazing countryside views, an enclosed garden, an indoor pool, loads of outside space and all the mod cons to make a truly memorable cottage holiday.
While there might not be the usual array of quirky and fun activities taking place in Totnes, it is a must visit, especially if you love the eccentric – it’s full of friendly people, fascinating history and tonnes of independent stores offering unique products.
Basing yourself here also means you’re close to the Dartington Estate with its sprawling country estate and Dartmouth, which is beautiful whatever the weather.
Not settled on a location just yet? If you’re not sure where to go or need a property that suits certain criteria why not take a look at the properties on Coast and Country Cottages’ portfolio? They have cottages and other similar accommodation exclusively in the Salcombe and Dartmouth area with coastal, rural and sites in between both!
Similarly, Toad Hall Cottages have over 900 properties to choose from, they’re a family run business with over 30 years experience and plenty of local knowledge, so they can really help you find the cottage of your dreams. If you know you want to be by the coast, but you’re not sure where exactly, Luxury Coastal can help you find the perfect holiday, with everything from romantic lodges to family homes and with properties across Devon from Dawlish to Exeter to Plymouth, you can find the place that best suits you and your needs.
