As we look forward to the new year and all those fun trips to Devon that you have planned, we thought we’d let you into a little secret and share some of the best hidden gems the county has to offer. Just make sure not to tell anyone else!

Start Point Lighthouse

Ok, Start Point is hardly a hidden gem, it’s an iconic landmark after all, but walking to Start Point gives you plenty of chances to view some of the county’s hidden beauty. Head along the South West Coast Path towards the lighthouse to see some spectacular views of the coastline. In the summer, there are tours that take you around the inside of the lighthouse which are well worth it – the view from the top is incredible.

White Lady Waterfall

Measuring 100 feet high, the White Lady Waterfall can be found at Lydford Gorge, the deepest gorge in the south west and one of the county’s most beautiful natural features. If you ever needed proof of how amazing nature is, this is the place to visit.

Sharrah Pool

Hidden within Holne Woods, this one is pretty hidden and is a little way off the well-travelled path. The pool is formed by parts of the River Dart and you’ll often find locals here wild swimming in the summer. There is a little waterfall a bit further upstream and with its overhanging trees and onshore boulders, it is a lovely spot for a picnic or a few hours lounging in the sun.

Soar Mill Cove

Located in south Devon, this is one of the most peaceful beaches in the region. It isn’t the most accessible cove in the county as you can only reach it on foot, which is why it is so quiet, even in the peak season. If you want the atmosphere of a private beach, make sure to add this one to your itinerary.

Hallsands

If you’re in the mood for something more atmospheric and spooky, plan a trip to Hallsands on the South Devon coast. The former village was once home to a thriving fishing community but in 1917, rising sea levels meant the villagers had to evacuate. These days you can see the remains of a few houses from viewing platforms high above the village – it is well worth a visit!
