As lockdown continues, those of you lucky enough to live in the Devon area have plenty of amazing places to escape your own four walls for an hour so. For the rest of us, take a look at these parks and greenspaces in the county and add them to your itinerary for later in the year!
Please be aware that under current lockdown restrictions, travel is not permitted, please do not travel to Devon at the moment.
As you might already know, Devon is full of beautiful greenspaces – it has 5 AONBs after all, but here are a few that you might not have heard of before, but definitely need to visit (when it is safe to do so!) for a little peace and quiet.
Located in the town of Sidmouth on the Jurassic Coast, this beautiful garden is named for the first Duke of Connaught, Queen Victoria’s youngest son. He opened the gardens himself back in the 1930s and they are every bit as delightful now as they were then! The gardens feature the famous Clock Tower and are where you can access the steps leading down to Jacobs Ladder beach.
If you want somewhere for a walk, a cycle ride or even a ride on a horse drawn barge you should head to the Grand Canal in Tiverton. In Mid-Devon, Tiverton is a great base as you are equi-distance from just about everything you can think of in the county. The canal is surrounded by the Country Park and is great for a day out enjoying nature.

Cockington is one of those must visit villages in the English Riviera, full of thatched cottages and cobbled streets, it is only accessible by horse (or on foot) and really transports you back into time. One of the biggest attractions is the grand country estate that can be found there and the surrounding parkland – perfect for picnics, sunbathing or just people watching.
The highest cliff top promenade in England, Babbacombe Downs is a beautiful garden right on the coast. On a clear day you can see right across to Portland Bill and the Babbacombe Cliff Railway operates from there so you can easily visit Oddicombe Beach at the bottom of the cliff.
if you have kids, this is a great place to help them burn up some energy. The park has a large children’s play area as well as a miniature railway and a putting green! Smeatons Tower and Hoe Park are also both within close proximity and you can see the ocean right from the play area.
Which greenspaces are you looking forward to seeing when lockdown restrictions are over? You can find out all the latest information regarding travel and coronavirus restrictions on the government’s website, gov.uk/coronavirus.
