As you might expect, many of the usual events and activities have been postponed or cancelled for this, but there are still a host of fun, family friendly things to do across Devon this October half term.
Of course, with government guidelines, events that are planned for half term might change at short notice, so please do check with the individual hosts before travelling. The majority of attractions will require you to book in advance and you will need to adhere to Track and Trace regulations, so make sure to contact them if you feel ill or if your plans change.
With all that out of the way, let’s look at what fun and hijinx you can get up to while in Devon this half term!
First up, there is the Crealy Spookfest which is running from 24th October – 1st November. Taking place at the Crealy Theme Park near Exeter, this event features a whole host of spooky fun to keep the whole family entertained. Tickets are £15 and must be booked in advance, head to their website to find out more.
If you feel like you need more spooks in your life, don’t forget to check out Exeter’s Spooks and Broomsticks Tour ! This free event is taking place on Halloween night and invites you (in an optional costume) to join the famous Red Coat Guides on a ghostly Halloween tour of the city. As this takes place at night, it might be one for the younger ones to sit out, but the older kids and adults will have an amazing time visiting Exeter’s most haunted areas! As these are outdoor, walking tours, there is no need to book, but be aware of each other and make sure to social distance, wash your hands and stay safe.
As Exeter is one of Devon’s biggest and most popular tourist destinations, there are plenty of things to keep you entertained during half term and being in the mid-Devon region, you are well placed to explore the whole of the county, including the popular English Riviera to the south, the Jurassic Coast to the east and the incredible beaches of the North. Plus, Exeter has two train stations and a regular bus service, all of which are offering socially distanced travel – so you can leave the car behind and focus on enjoying yourself.
If you’re planning to stay in the Exeter area, there are plenty of options for you, whether you are looking for a cosy B&B, a hotel with all the mod cons or a cute cottage where you can please yourself. You can find more details about available accommodation here. Just remember to check with the individual provider to find out more about their Covid policies.
Another spooky half term event perfect for the whole family is Spooky Fun at Bygones . The event includes a hunt and a riddle to claim your half term treat so make sure you have your thinking caps on! As with most events, you will need to prebook your tickets and pay in advance, so make sure to visit their website for the most up to date information. Torquay and the rest of the English Riviera is an incredibly popular destination all year around, so you’ll find plenty of things to see and do during half term, including Babbacombe Model Village and Paignton Zoo.
Speaking of Paignton Zoo, half term is the perfect time to explore their Great Big Brick Safari which is running until 3rd January 2021. The event is being run according to social distancing rules and is operating a one way system throughout. You will need to book in advance and full details are available on their website.
There is a whole host of accommodation options available to you from holiday parks to hotels. Restrictions are in place, so the number of facilities may be different, but you can still be sure of a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Find out more about local accommodation here .
Obviously, not all of you want, or are able, to travel to Devon at the moment, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out, the team at Buckfast Abbey are offering their Oaks and Acorns online. These sessions are perfect for grandparents and grandkids and as they take place online, it’s a great way to spend time with family members who are shielding or you’ve not seen for a while. Make sure to book your place in advance here .
