Wherever you are in Devon, chances are it is charming and fascinating with plenty of local natural beauty spots. With the vast array of coastal regions, with the dramatic cliffs of the East coast to the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the expanse of gorgeous countryside which includes two National Parks and the quaint, thatched cottages of the region’s villages… Trying to decide on picturesque places to visit is hard.

That’s why we’ve decided to take on the impossible task of whittling down Devon’s most beautiful places to offer just five suggestions of places for you to visit this Summer. Whether you’re looking for something quirky, somewhere full of wildlife, somewhere historical or something else entirely, we’re sure you’ll find it in one of these places.

Clovelly

This tiny village is a well-known tourist attraction in its own right. Aside from the historical cobbled streets, the beautiful views and wonderful regular food festivals, it is also fascinating for being mostly pedestrianised. Here you’ll find more donkeys than you will delivery drivers and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.

Totnes

If bohemian is what you’re after, Totnes is a must visit. This cute market town is full of unique independent shops and a real focus on local produce. Aside from being a great place to find unique gifts, Totnes is also home to a number of castles, a vineyard and a local cheese producer. Plus, it has its own main line train station, so you can easily visit it from a variety of locations around the UK.

Lundy Island

Aka, Puffin Island, this is where Devon’s puffin population lives! Found in the Bristol channel off the coast of Devon, Lundy Island is a beautiful conservation area full of wildlife. The waters around it are protected and it has no electricity, so you can really escape the pressures of everyday life. Lundy Island is accessible via ferry and helicopter from the mainland with trips running most days and you can guarantee incredible views wherever you look. Not only that, but there are loads of things to do despite its tiny size, from climbing to diving, there are organised sessions taking place and you can even stay over in one of the cottages!

Dartmouth

This town in south Devon can be found along the River Dart and is an ideal place to visit if you’re into your naval history. The town is probably most famous for the castle, which makes a great addition to the Instagram grid and has plenty of cute coffee shops and eateries for you to while away the hours in.

Beer

When talking about picturesque places in Devon, we can’t ignore the Jurassic Coast and the dramatic views that can be found in the East of Devon. Beer is arguably one of the region’s prettiest villages and being surrounded by both coast and countryside, gives you the best of both worlds. The beach is particularly beautiful and with the local gardens, high street and family friendly attractions, is a great place to visit this spring.
