4th August 2020

South Devon Railway’s Buckfastleigh site will reopen every Tuesday and Thursday, plus weekends until further notice. This is welcome news to the team, who have been running a Save our Station campaign to raise money that has been lost during the period the site has been closed. Prior to reopening, the last steam train that ran was on 17th March, leaving the station without its primary source of income, the longest period the line has been closed for over 51 years since it reopened as a tourist attraction in 1969.
At this point in the year, SDR would have normally welcomed over 50,000 visitors to the scenic seven mile line, but because of lockdown and the continuing uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus the station is in a deficit of over £500,000. Since the campaign launched, it has raised £225,669.79.
The first SDR open site days were both successful and the bookings for the Polar Express have been astonishing since tickets went on sale on the 31st July, you can find these on the South Devon Railway website. The popular Facebook live broadcasts will continue now that the site is reopen and visitors are able to experience the joy of the railway from home with the launch of our DVD, which can be bought in the onsite shop and the website.
