Categories: Visitor News
When the sun is shining and the summer is in full swing you might be tempted to head to the beach, but that isn’t the only picturesque place to enjoy the sunshine when in Devon. The county is full of beautiful parks and gardens too, perfect for spending a few hours enjoying the open air.
Castle Hill Gardens, Barnstaple

While Barnstaple might be better known for being one of North Devon’s biggest towns, it is also home to this 50 acre space set against an 18th century mansion house. Head towards Castle Hill and look for the house with the castle and you’ll easily find this historic parkland.
There are plenty of walks through woodlands, alongside the river and you can even climb up to the castle where you’ll find some incredible views over Exmoor and beyond.
Coleton Fishacre
This National Trust managed site in Dartmouth has an RHS accredited garden which provides lots of places for picturesque walks. The gardens give you glimpses of the sea, plus you have access to the South West Coast Path from here.
Tessier Gardens, Torquay

This isn’t the place to go for a family friendly walk as it is for adults only, but that does make it a tranquil place to visit. The garden has won awards including the RHS Green Flag award and being based between Babbacombe and St Marychurch in Torquay, you’re perfectly placed to escape from the hustle and bustle of the English Riviera without straying too far.
Burrow Farm Gardens, Axminster
This 13 acre garden is a delightfully colourful garden set in the east of Devon. No matter what time of year you visit this garden, you’ll find something pretty to catch your eye. The site is also home to a Roman clay quarry which is full of wild flowers as well as an ancient woodland garden giving you plenty of places to explore.
Elizabethan Gardens, Plymouth
This quiet area of Plymouth offers a delightful garden that can instantly transport you back to the Elizabethan era. Between the original 16th century design and the cobbled streets this garden features fragrant herbs and colourful flowers all year round.
These are just a selection of the many gardens and parks you can enjoy while visiting Devon – you can find more inspiration for gardens and parks to visit here.
