Now that lockdown has eased and more and more events are starting to take place, the team behind the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower celebrations are beginning to reschedule and announce previously postponed or cancelled events. With this in mind, there is never a better time to visit Britain’s Ocean City.
With its rich history, varied high street, vibrant nightlife and proximity to the border with Cornwall making it easily accessible, Plymouth is a popular place for holiday makers. Whether you’re looking for a family friendly break or a romantic getaway for two or perhaps somewhere to take the dog, you’ll be spoiled for choice in Plymouth. To give you some insight into this fascinating city, here are some suggestions for how to spend a day in Plymouth.
First off, getting here. Plymouth has its own mainline train station, which has connections all over the country. The region also has an extensive bus network as well as being served by main roads giving you easy access to the motorway.
Once you’re here, you need to decide where you’re going to head first. Like most cities, Plymouth is split into sections, each one with its own set of attractions and places to stay. One of the most famous places to visit is the Royal William Yard which is still home to some of the most important military buildings in the country, though these days, it is also a haven for foodies with eateries everywhere. The Independent quarter is a great place for shopping, while the Barbican’s historic quarter is a lure for artists. Wherever you are though, you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied.
If you’re a fan of history and dramatic country houses, make sure to take a trip to Saltram, which is managed by the National Trust. This 18th century estate features miles of parkland as well as house full of treasures, a secret garden and a loads more to explore. While the house isn’t yet open, visitors are welcome to explore the gardens with prebookings.

For those of you who want to find out more about the region’s maritime history as well as the marine life that can be found here, take a look at the National Marine Aquarium which is has reopened with social distancing in place. Not only is this the largest aquarium in the UK but with the huge array of projects and activities, you can easily spend all day there. The exhibits feature a number of underwater habitats and with creatures from Plymouth Sound to the Great Barrier Reef there will be plenty to delight you.
If the weather is being unkind and you have kids to entertain, check out Clip ‘n’ Climb Plymouth who are also now open following the easing of restrictions. Here you’ll find 44 climbing challenges as well as other activities to get involved in. It’s a great way to try out rock climbing or getting in some practice if you’re already fairly skilled and with the variety of different sessions that are held, including those for guests with SEN, you’ll find plenty of ways to have fun.

Obviously you'll need to eat at some point, so its lucky that many of the city's pubs, restaurants and cafes are reopening. Check the times for Bistrot Pierre and if you can, book a table. It is perfect for a casual catch up, a special occasion or relaxed family meals. The menu features several seasonal French classics as well as vegetarian and vegan options, so everyone can find something they love. Don’t forget, if you’re looking for somewhere to stay, Bistrot Pierre also offer rooms in the Grade 1 listed Admiral’s House which is in the heart of the Royal William Yard. Their full English breakfasts are particularly popular, and you can expect the same incredible food as dinner guests. If you are interested in grabbing a bite, we recommend you head to Royal William’s Yard which is full of eateries offering everything from fine dining to quick bites.
Once you’ve eaten, you can soak up the atmosphere by visiting Plymouth Hoe, Sutton Harbour or the Barbican where you can really immerse yourself in the city’s heritage. If you’re in the city during the summer, make sure to spend some time at The Box. Originally scheduled to open in May, The Box features a museum, an art gallery full of historical and contemporary pieces, plus an archive. It’s a fascinating place to visit and many of the planned events for the Mayflower anniversary will be taking place there. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the grand opening.
If by now you’re starting to feel a bit tired and are thinking of finding somewhere to stay the night, you’re in luck, Plymouth has accommodation to suit every taste and budget. For the ultimate in luxury, book a room at Boringdon Hall Hotel and Spa. This manor house hotel is full of history and with the fine dining restaurant, beautiful surroundings and the pampering available at the Gaia Spa, you’ll feel indulged and well rested. Want a hotel that is a bit more central? The New Continental Hotel is in the heart of the city, so you’re never too far from the action. The New Continental is housed within a Grade 2 listed Victorian hotel and has ample parking, a leisure complex, a restaurant and plenty of rooms to choose from, depending on what you need. While there might still be restrictions on all the park's facilities, there is still plenty to keep you entertained and offer a comfortable stay. Alternatively, Bovisand Lodge Heritage Apartments are set within the grounds of the park but all have their own entrances giving you a little more privacy. With direct access to the South West Coast Path and the range of facilities at the park, this is a great choice for anyone who wants to enjoy the region’s wildlife and the chance to spend time at the beach.
