As we’re celebrating World Bike Day this week, we thought we’d suggest a few of Devon’s best cycle routes that you can enjoy. Whether you’re an avid cyclist, someone who just likes a short, weekend ride or someone in training, you’ll find plenty of routes to suit you, whatever your ability.
This one is pretty hilly, so it might not be for everyone, but if you fancy a bit of a challenge, start off at Totnes and head along the National Cycle Route 2 for a partially traffic free route along the River Dart and through the grounds at Dartington Hall. Much of the route takes you through farmland and lanes, giving you plenty of great countryside views and as a circular route, you can head out safe in the knowledge that you won’t get lost!
The Exe Estuary Trail links Exeter and Exmouth and is one of the more popular cycle routes in the county. It is a fairly easy route with cycle paths and country lanes taking up the majority of the route and you’ll get to explore ancient bridges and chapels before ending up at Killerton Park.
This route is mostly traffic free and follows a former railway path but there are a few hills hidden in there too. Start off by following the Granite Way from Okehampton to Lydford where you’ll pass through some of Dartmoor’s highest points and get to catch sight of some Victorian viaducts before heading towards Brent Tor, one of the most iconic places on Dartmoor. The climb to the top of Brent Tor can be challenging, but the views from the top are worth it and even if you stop off for a rest, you’ll be gifted with incredible views. Brent Tor is an extinct volcano and a 14th century chapel sits at the top!
This is one of the best ways to explore North Devon and Exmoor, the 180 mile cycling and walking trail is the longest traffic free route in the UK. It’s a great place for family bike rides and features unspoiled countyside, dramatic cliffs and beautiful beaches which you’ll recognise from the story of Tarka the Otter.
Will you be taking on any of these trails over the next few weeks? You can find more information on cycling in Devon here.
