Categories: Visitor News
We might not be able to enjoy a tour of a distillery followed by fantastic local food at the moment, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate and enjoy the distinctive flavour of a real Devon distilled gin and with World Gin Day taking place on 13th June, you have the perfect excuse to let loose with the tipple of your choice!
World Gin Day is celebrated on the second Saturday in gin and is an opportunity for gin drinkers everywhere, whether they are a connoisseur they just have their particular favourite variety to come together and enjoy a gin filled day of fun. Sadly, like many of the events that were due to take place across the county this year, it isn’t possible to take part in activities and workshops in our favourite bars, hotels or at Devon’s distilleries, but that doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop – World Gin Day is heading online, so no matter where you are, you can join in using your computer or smart phone.
If you are planning to join in with World Gin Day on 13th June, why not do so with a gin produced right here in Devon? It might be having a resurgence in popularity right now, but gin has been distilled in Devon since the Middle Ages and to this day, the gins created here have won awards across the globe. Most of the gins distilled in Devon use local water as their base, particularly from Dartmoor which is considered to be particularly pure, as well as a whole host of locally sourced botanicals which give it its distinctive flavour.

One of England’s oldest working distilleries can be found in Devon and is the home of Plymouth Gin. The team there have been making their award-winning Plymouth Gin since the 1700s to an original recipe and it is brewed in a building that dates back to the 1400s! You can order Plymouth Gin online from their website here.
That’s not the only well known gin in the region either, in the north of the county in the Wolf Valley, you can find a whole host of distilleries using flavours and ingredients from the natural world around them and of course, there are a number of artisan producers springing up all the time.
For a real taste of south Devon though, look out for products from Salcombe Gin which is produced in a beautiful waterside distillery overlooking the estuary. The distilling process can in fact be seen by passersby as the 450l copper pot which has been making gin there for years is on full view behind glass doors. Check out their gin varieties on their website.
