Dartmoor is one of the most impressive areas of Devon, with woods, meadows, moors, rivers and plenty of fun myths and legends to keep you up at night, the National Park is a great place to visit in the spring, especially when there are signs of new life all over the place.
If you like exploring on foot or embarking on a walking holiday, Dartmoor is a great place to look. The moor is riddled with sign posted walking trails, bridleways and a few trails which are off the beaten track. The Lich Way is one of the most historic trails that follows a bridle way through the moor taking you to Postbridge and Bellever. The moor is home to a number of picturesque villages for you to stroll around too if you don’t feel up to traversing the wild terrain.
Perhaps the most famous of all the Dartmoor residents are the herds of wild ponies that roam the moor. There is something quite special about catching sight of the new foals playing together while the landscape of the moor spreads out behind them. Make sure to visit in the spring for a chance to see the babies as they take their first tentative steps! The ponies live on the moor all year around and you’re never too far away from one, just remember that they are wild so don’t approach them and definitely don’t try to ride any of them!
Dartmoor is rich with local history, with some sites going back to Neolithic times. You’ll find everything from stone circles, stone crosses and menhirs as well as museums and ancient villages with evidence of their heritage on full show. Dartmoor’s misty atmosphere and the diverse history of the region means there are plenty of local stories to explore.
