With its abundant natural larder, Devon is naturally a great place to be if you love food. The rich landscape provides farmland perfect for growing crops and raising livestock and the coastline is home to everything from crab, lobster, mussels and various fish making it the ideal destination for anyone who wants to sample the very best seafood that Britain has to offer.
If you are in the mood for some tasty seafood dishes, here are the best places in Devon to visit for fresh, locally caught fish, with everything on the menu from traditional fish and chips to more elegant lobster dishes!
Being the South West’s largest fishing port, we can’t not include Brixham on this list. The coastline in this area produces a whole host of delicious seafood, including lobster, lemon sole, Dover sole, hake and mussels. You’ll find that the restaurants and eateries, as well as the B&Bs and hotels in and around the town are all supplied with the catch from Brixham’s waters and you can often find yourself eating the same catch in the evening as you see being brought in in the afternoon!
It isn’t just Brixham that is a great destination for anyone wanting fresh local seafood – the whole of the English Riviera is home to some of the UK’s finest seafood – it’s no wonder that many of the region’s top chefs have based themselves there!
This fishing village in the north of Devon is a tourist attraction in its own right, but it is also famous for the quality of its local seafood. All of the eateries and hotels in Clovelly source the majority of their food from the village. You’ll find fish, crab, lobster and more landed daily in the quay. The village also regularly hosts seaweed, lobster and crab and herring festivals annually giving the residents and visitors the chance to celebrate sustainable fishing methods and of course, the amazing tastes of fresh seafood.
If you’re looking for a foodie break, Salcombe in South Devon is a great suggestion. The estuary area is home to a number of seafood restaurants offering just about every seafood dish imaginable, from the traditional to the more unusual. The region is particularly famous for their crab dishes, so no trip to the town is complete without stopping for crab sandwiches.
This harbour town in the North of Devon has quickly become the region’s gastronomic hub. The town is full of eateries offering good quality local produce particularly along Fore Street and the harbour area. It’s one of North Devon’s popular fishing ports and if you’re lucky enough to find a sunny day, you can sit outside in the harbour and watch the latest catch come in.
