Obviously we love the coastal areas and the history of South, North and East Devon, but this autumn, why not spend some time in the heart of the county? Mid Devon is perfect for anyone who wants to explore the great outdoors and enjoy some brisk walks or cycle rides, anyone who wants to experience the region’s vast history, anyone who likes a spot of shopping or anyone who wants to embark on something a bit adventurous… Basically, Mid Devon is the perfect location, whatever type of break you are looking for. Plus, you are well placed to explore the whole of the county, wherever you choose in Mid-Devon, you’re equidistance from the wilds of Dartmoor, the incredible surfing beaches of North Devon and the popular destinations of South Devon.
So, in a nutshell, why haven’t you already visited Mid-Devon?
If you still need some convincing, here are a few reasons why you should visit the region this Autumn.
Whether you’re looking for something adventurous or calming, Mid-Devon really does have something for everyone.
For those of you who want to roam the countryside and lose yourself for a while, why not head to the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? This far reaching section of countryside is protected and is home to a wide variety of plant and animal life and during the autumn, when the leaves start changing colour, it is a beautiful place to explore.

Similarly, Fursdon Gardens is an attractive and informal garden to explore with mixed traditional and contemporary planting. You’ll find a range of flowers, trees and shrubs and the hillside garden is interesting and colourful whatever the season and you can always stop off for a cheeky cream tea at the onsite café!
If you have kids with you, get them away from screens for a few hours by visiting The Bear Trail. This family assault course is an award winning outdoor family attraction in Cullompton that has 30 obstacles and unlimited mud! Whatever your age, this is a great option for a fun day out!
Or you could spend some time enjoying one of the many National Trust properties and gardens in the area, you can find out more about what is on offer around Devon here. Mid Devon is also a hive of cycle networks and walking routes, particularly around the Grand Canal that goes through the centre of Tiverton, including the Grand Western Canal Cycle Route, a simple nine mile route that is suitable whatever your ability, find out more here.
If you’re someone who prefers something a bit more crafty, take a look at the courses on offer at The Old Kennels in Honiton. Located in the heart of the Blackdown Hills, the Old Kennels offer short courses throughout the year in a variety of heritage arts, skills and traditional crafts run by local, national and international artisans. No experience is needed, whether you’re looking to improve an existing skill or lean a new one, you’ll find there is plenty on offer here.
For those of you who want to exercise your wallets, Mid-Devon is a great place to visit for those that want to indulge in a little retail therapy. The many towns and villages have a mix of independent and high street retailers and you can find the Princesshay shopping centre in Exeter, which is only twenty minutes by car from each of the main towns in the region. As well as Princesshay, Exeter is a hive of boutique stores and of course, you have Crediton nearby which is well known for its independent high street and focus on the arts. For a more traditional shopping experience, Tiverton’s Pannier Market has a wide range of stalls featuring a host of local produce from crafts to fruit and veg!
Speaking of Tiverton, Tiverton Castle offers a great day off and even has accommodation options for anyone who likes the idea of staying in a castle!
Of course, we can’t mention things to do in Mid-Devon without talking about all the things there are to see and do in Exeter! The city is home to one of the oldest and most beautiful cathedrals in England, located right in the city centre, Exeter Cathedral is open for visitors to explore at their own pace or there are a range of tours, including guided tours and roof tours for those who want to learn a bit more about this fascinating historic building.

In addition to the Cathedral tours, there are also a range of city tours including the City Wall Trail, a Medieval Trail a Woollen Trail and a host of interesting walks and cycle routes around the city to really help you explore. Sports fans will also find plenty to entertain them in Exeter, as well as the football team, there is also Exeter Racecourse While there has been some changes to their line up this year, there is still plenty going on, just get in touch with them to find out the latest information.
Alternatively, the whole family will love a day out at Crealy Family Theme Park – one of the most popular theme parks in the UK. The multi-award winning attraction is perfect for the whole family and can be found just off the motorway outside Exeter. The park holds a host of activities throughout the year giving you even more to see and do during your stay! If you don’t want to leave the action, you can even stay on their neighbouring campsite!

Foodies will have an amazing time when staying in Mid-Devon, it’s location means you can sample local produce from all over the county and enjoy them in cosy tearooms, fine dining establishments, traditional country pubs and just about everything in between!

One place to recommend is the tearooms at Fursdon Gardens like we said, especially if you’re in the mood for a Cream Tea. Another is the Devon Hotel, their Carriages Brasserie serves English and Continental cuisine, as well as popular dishes from around the world. A daily carvery is available and is one of the most popular in the south west! They also have the option for private dining for anyone wanting a hearty meal for a special occasion.
The region is also famous for its many farmshops and farmers’ markets, make sure to keep your eyes out for local advertising for the next ones and pick up a tasty, local treat or two!
Mid-Devon is full of amazing places to stay, we’ve already mentioned Tiverton Castle, but that’s not the only option for a luxurious and in some instances, unique, places to stay. For those of you interested in a bed and breakfast there are loads of options. In Cullompton, you’ll find Upton Farm Bed and Breakfast, a beautiful 15th century farmhouse, complete with thatched roof, set on a working dairy farm – ideal for anyone wanting a traditional countryside stay.
South View Farm Bed and Breakfast is another option. This B&B occupies a sunny position with a beautiful garden and views of the surrounding countryside and if that wasn’t enough, you get to enjoy fresh eggs every morning laid by the farm’s own hens!

Self catering is often a popular choice for those coming to the region to explore and to sample the incredible food on offer. Staying in a self catering property often gives you a bit more freedom and you aren’t tied into curfews or meal times. Castle Brake Holiday Park is located on the outskirts of Exeter and offers a range of different holiday homes offered on a self catering basis with fully fitted kitchens, all the mod cons and many of them are also dog friendly.
Or you could give glamping a go by booking a stay at The Orchard Retreat in Crediton. Choose between holiday cottages or a handcrafted yurt with their own private bathroom and kitchen facilities. This is a great choice for anyone wanting to try something a little different while visiting Mid-Devon, the site even has its own Hidden Tubhouse, an outdoor bathroom with cast iron baths and a shower!
Alternatively, you’ll find a whole host of hotels in this region too. The Best Western Tiverton Hotel is perfect for travellers, whether for business or pleasure, it is located just ten minutes from J27 of the M5 and is within easy access of Exeter and Taunton. The hotel sits within two and a half acres of mature gardens with ample free parking and electric car charging points, it is ideal for a relaxing break or anyone wanting to explore the wider area. For something a bit more rural, The Fox and Hounds Country Hotel stands along the River Taw, surrounded by forests. The onsite bar serves food, real ales and ciders and the head chef makes a point to source all their ingredients locally. In fact, they are one of the only places approved to sell Exmoor beef – which is known for its quality.

While we’re on the subject of accommodation with great food, we’ve already mentioned the restaurant at the Devon Hotel, but you should check out the main accommodation too. The heart of the hotel is an elegant former Georgian manor house which retains much of its historic charm while also offering modern luxury.
