South Devon Railway are pleased to report that reopening of their Buckfastleigh site to visitors during August, September and to date for a modest donation has continued to prove popular despite fears that they might be quiet. The site only operations started on the weekend of 1st and 2nd August and have continued at weekends, as well as Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The first two and a half months of being open has seen the site welcome around 6,000 visitors, which is a stark contrast to previous years, which would normally see double the current daily visitors and income. The team will therefore be continuing their SOS funding appeal, which now totals £306,509. The SDR are still aiming to reach their £500,000 target.
South Devon Railway will remain open every Tuesday and Thursday, plus weekends from 10am until 4pm until further notice. The adjacent Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary is also open and is proving popular. The weekend only operation of the open air Miniature Railway around the site and the live stream Garden Railway have been big hits with visitors but are subject to good weather.
There is plenty of space at the site, allowing you to enjoy a day out safely. Many of the visitors are locals and all of them have commented positively on the amount of free space, how safe they feel and the friendly SDR staff.
