With all the restrictions surrounding attraction capacity you might be worried about what you can do with the kids during the school holidays this October – well, we have a great socially distanced idea for you – geocaching!
Devon is a great place to give this activity a go, it gets you out in the countryside, doesn’t cost a penny and you can do it all without having to worry about being too close to people or having to remember your mask! All you need is a smartphone and you can get involved with a real world outdoor treasure hunt.
So, what exactly is geocaching?
According to the official website for this fun, family friendly activity, geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game on which the participants use GPS to find containers that are hidden all over the world.
Once you’ve found one of the hidden caches, you can log your find and share your experience with other players using the official app and website! All you need to do is enter a Devon postcode and the list of available caches will appear, all you have to do next is decide where you want your adventure to start. Basically, it is orienteering for the modern age! Find the app and more information here https://www.geocaching.com/play
Even if you don’t want to use the official app, geocacheing is a great way to entertain the whole family if you want to keep socially distanced. Why not come up with a checklist of things to see or find and then go for a walk and see how many of those things you come across? It’s also a great way to get everyone out from in front of a screen. With its abundance of countryside, coast and nature trails, Devon is the perfect place to get involved with treasure hunts, whether they’re of your own creation or part of the world wide game. Just remember to make sure you keep your hands clean if you touch any of the finds and to keep enough space between you and other treasure hunters!
Have you ever tried geocaching? We’d love to hear more about your experiences, you can get in touch with us on Twitter or Facebook.
