As we start to come into autumn, with the colder weather and greyer skies there is no reason to avoid Devon especially not when there are plenty of beautiful villages full of charm and their own history. We’ve put together a list of villages you should visit this autumn, so whether you want to be near the sea, in the country or in the middle of nowhere, take a look at this list and add some new destinations to your itinerary.
Obviously we had to include Clovelly, this village in North Devon is a tourist attraction in its own right. It has stunning cobbled streets, 16th century cottages and some incredible views of the harbour. To help preserve the village, no cars are allowed to drive through it, but there is a special parking area with a Land Rover that ferries visitors to and from the village. For somewhere small, there is a lot to do including museums, walks and of course, photo opportunities.
Much like Clovelly, this is a historic village that still has thatched cottages and roads more suited to horse and cart than car. It is known as being one of the remaining ‘Chocolate Box’ villages in the UK and can be found just outside Torquay.
This picturesque fishing village is on the east coast of Devon just a stone’s throw from the dramatic Jurassic coast. Despite being a village, there is enough activity and attractions there to warrant visiting for a couple of days, it has everything you could want from a seaside village, restaurants and cafes serving fresh sea food, a lovely beach at Lyme Bay, white chalk cliffs and lots of attractions, plus events going on all year around.
With its cute cove complete with visiting dolphins, Combe Martin is a great place to spend time with the family. It’s right on the edge of the Exmoor National Park and has plenty of rock pools, walking trails and more to keep you entertained. Plus, the village is home to the famous Pack o Cards Inn that was built to resemble a deck of cards and is a real draw for visitors.
This colourful fishing village can be found in North Devon. One of its big draws is the brightly coloured fisherman’s cottages which line the narrow streets. Appledore has an excellent range of independent shops, galleries and cafes many of which are dog friendly, as is the sandy beach at nearby Instow. There is a ferry that runs seasonally across from the harbour to Instow for those of you who want to explore the wider area.
These are by no means not the only villages that you can visit in Devon, but they should be enough to inspire you – if you visit any of them we’d love to see your photos, you can get in touch with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
