Going anywhere during the autumn months always runs the risk of getting caught in the rain, but it doesn’t mean that you have to be stuck inside glaring at the grey skies, there are still plenty of things you can be doing and right here in Devon, there are tonnes of rainy day activities for you to enjoy.
We all know Britain’s south west coast is often pretty blessed when it comes to the weather. Devon has a slightly warmer climate than other areas of the UK (it’s why the food and drink made here are so much better than anywhere else!) but the rain does appear from time to time which is why we’re fully prepared to keep our visitors entertained while we wait for the clouds to part.
A number of the attractions in Devon are all weather ones, so a little rain won’t get in the way of you having a good time, just in case you don’t believe us though, we’ll take you through a few of them so the next time you’re in the area and the heavens open, you’ll know where to go.
If you’re in Exeter, the first place that springs to mind is Crealy Theme Park and Resort. As well as the well-known roller coasters, there are a number of indoor rides too and as it is suitable for the whole family, no matter what their age, no one will get bored. There is 75 square feet of undercover play and there are even over 200 animals for you to befriend! It’s unlikely that you’ll need to kill a few hours when visiting Crealy, but just in case, there are other attractions nearby that are ideal for hiding from the weather. Bicton Countryside Museum isn’t that far and has an eclectic collection of exhibits perfect for anyone wanting to find out more about the history of the region’s more rural areas.

If the wet weather makes you want to bury yourself under a duvet, that’s fine too, Crealy Meadows is on the Crealy site and has caravan and camping options including luxury accommodation to suit all budgets and tastes. Alternatively, Castle Brake Holiday Park has a variety of facilities onsite and guests are also welcome to use the facilities at their sister park so they can hide from the rain without having to go too far. Alpine Park Cottages is also in the vicinity and there is something very cosy about being in a cottage listening to the rain outside! Plus, being within easy reach of Exeter, Exmouth, Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton, you’re well placed to start exploring once the rain eases off.

Exeter’s Powderham Castle is also a great choice for anyone who is looking for a rainy day activity. There is so much to see and do there that you’ll probably need a return journey, luckily, there is an option to do so for free!
If you have a family with youngsters, we know it can be frustrating to keep them entertained when the weather isn’t its best. Pennywell Farm in Buckfastleigh offers activities whatever the weather and with the abundance of cute animals onsite, we’re sure you’ll soon forget about the weather. Buckfast Abbey is nearby as is South Devon Railway, so make sure to take note and come back when the sky is looking a little less grey. Or if you want to stay under cover and indulge in some retail therapy, the Shops at Dartington are another great option – though the kids might not think so! Northgate House Hotel is an ideal place to base yourself, set on the edge of Dartmoor, you have some incredible views, plus you’re in a good location for exploring the wider area. Alternatively, you could stay at Dartington Hall and take advantage of the many activities and services that are offered on site plus, you’ll get a chance to explore the shopping opportunities of the quirky town of Totnes which neighbours Dartington.

If you happen to be in the Dartington area, you’re well placed to spend the day at Woodlands Family Theme Park, home to the largest indoor play centre in the south west, this theme park has a whole host of things to keep you entertained and if there is a break in the weather, there are indoor and outdoor activities that are suitable for the whole family, so everyone will have a good time.
For those of you who are based in Plymouth and want something to occupy you while waiting for the rain to clear, head to Clip ‘n’ Climb Plymouth. With 44 individual climbing challenges and two extra challenges of the leap of faith, drop slide and the ValoClimb there is something for everyone. There is loads to do in Plymouth what with it being one of Devon’s largest areas. The whole family will love spending time learning about water conservation at the National Marine Aquarium. The parents will also love being so close to Plymouth Gin where you can not only get a tour of the distillery but have a few samples too.

The English Riviera is a great place to go for anyone wanting to feel like you were somewhere more exotic with the palm trees that line the pavements and the warm climate, but on the rare occasion that you get a spot of rain, you’re also well placed to hide in one of the area’s many attractions. Torquay’s Dinosaur World is a great family friendly, interactive, indoor exhibition of dinosaurs and fossils. Or nearby Kents Cavern with its network of prehistoric caves gets you out if the rain and underground.
