If you’re someone who loves their food, then a trip to Devon is an absolute must. There are loads of great places to eat and drink in Devon, you can see a full list of eateries, pubs and tea rooms here if you want a comprehensive list of places to eat. For those of you who want to know about some Devon delicacies, read on…
You’ll already be aware of some of the amazing local food you can get in Devon, but we thought we’d give you a low down of some of the things you absolutely have to try when you’re in the region.
Starting with an obvious one, but when Devon is the home of the largest fishing port in the whole of the South West, we can’t not have it as number one really can we? Head to Brixham where you’ll find fresh seafood being delivered to the markets, restaurants and cafes every day. For those that love the British tradition of Fish and Chips, you’ll find some of the best in the country, or if you want to push the boat out, be sure to try the crab, scallops, mussels and just about everything else you can think of! You can even visit the Brixham fish markets and see where your dinner has come from.
We know we keep banging on about cream teas, but locally made clotted cream is something else. It is made by heating full fat cow’s milk and then letting it cool slowly, that’s how they make it melt in the mouth.
So, if you see somewhere offering locally made clotted cream either on their deserts or with a cream tea, jump on it. Just remember to put the cream on before the jam, to do it the other way around is nothing short of treason.
By the same token, locally made ice cream and of course, locally made custard are also well worth a try.
Like the majority of the west country, Devon produces some incredible ciders because of the near perfect apple growing conditions of the region. There are a number of tours available that will take you around a cider mill so you can see exactly how it is made from the moment the apples are picked to when it is poured into your glass. The cider produced in the region comes in a variety of different flavours and you have the choice between still and sparkling, so make sure to try it all! (But please do so responsibly!)
Ok, hear us out, Cornwall might have stuck their name on it, but the pasty was originally invented in Devon and with the best ingredients being produced locally, it would be almost sinful not to have one. You’ll probably just notice that here the bakeries refer to them as Devon Pasties and you might notice they look a little different, in Devon they’re made properly so you’ll find that the pastry is crimped at the top rather than the sides. You can find the traditional ones with locally reared beef or if you want an alternative, you’ll find everything from vegetarian ones, vegan ones, gluten free ones and ones with lots of fun, modern flavours.
If you went to the seaside and didn’t buy fudge, did you actually go to the seaside? When you’re at a beach resort in Devon, make sure to scout out the shops and stalls selling locally made Devonshire fudge. Like we said before, this is a great place to eat clotted cream, and most of the locally produced fudge is created with said clotted cream as a base ingredient creating a taste you won’t have experience before.
