17th June 2019
Categories: Visitor News
This year, World Food Week runs from 24th to 30th June and while we whole heartedly encourage you all to go out and enjoy the many cuisines that can be found around the world, we have so much to shout about in Devon that we thought we’d focus on some of the food you can get here.
Another reason to focus on Devon food this World Food Week is the fact that National Cream Tea Day falls this week too and we all know that Devon does Cream Teas better than anywhere else!
Aside from Cream Teas though, there are plenty of other things to nibble on this World Food Week…
Dartmouth Pie
Devon has loads of native varieties of sheep, so it’s no surprise that one of Devon’s most popular traditional dishes is the Dartmouth Pie which us made with lamb, fruits and spices. Back in the day, if you couldn’t afford lamb you’d make yourself a Devonshire Squab Pie, which we presume is made out of some sort of pigeon. Can’t imagine that that would be very popular on menus these days!
Custard, Cream and all things dairy!
Devon cream and Devon custard are two of the county’s greatest exports, so be sure to have lashings of both all over your apple based deserts! Why not keep your eyes peeled for a Devonshire Junket, which makes the most of Devon’s rich cream and milk and has a generous glug of brandy in it!
Devon Apple Cake
Apples are found all over Devon, it’s why we’re so good at making cider! You’ll find lots of variations on Devon Apple Cake and a very local apple dish known as Apple Dappy, as well as other apple related deserts to try and of course, you can’t turn down a freshly made local cider!
Seafood
It isn’t known as the seafood coast for nothing, Devon has plenty of beautiful, fresh fish and seafood to try. If you’re wanting a classic, you could grab fish and chips from any of the coastal resorts or perhaps a crab sandwich? If you want to really get your teeth into some of the region’s best sea food, be sure to grab oysters from Bigbury Bay, mussels from the Taw, scallops from Brixham, crab from Dartmouth and herrings from Clovelly.
So really the question this World Food Week isn’t what are you going to have, but why aren’t you in Devon making the most of the local food?!
