There are some exciting things coming up at the Torre Abbey Museum this summer, including a touring exhibition from the House of Illustration, the BFG in Pictures and the return of the hugely popular Open Air Cinema Festival.
The BFG in Pictures exhibition will be running from 8th June until 1st September, with entry included in the usual admission price for the museum. It features reproductions of Quentin Blake’s illustrations from the much loved Roald Dahl story.
The BFG in Pictures is curated by Sir Quentin Blake himself and features over 40 reproductions, including those of previously unseen and unpublished illustrations. They provide a unique insight into the development of one of the most iconic characters in children’s literature and what might have been!
Talking about the exhibition on his website, Sir Quinten Blake said: “I was originally commissioned to produce a dozen illustrations for the BFG. After the book had arrived at the printers, Roald complained that there were not enough illustrations, and within a few days, I produced more than twenty drawings. However, he was still not happy, and so that the pictures could run through the text in quantity, I went back to the beginning and started again.”
The exhibition has been touring around the UK and everyone at Torre Abbey Museum is excited to welcome it to Torquay!
Also coming to Torre Abbey this summer is the return of the hugely popular Open Air Cinema Festival this August for the third consecutive year. This year’s confirmed screenings include Woodstock the movie, The Greatest Showman: Sing-a-long, Bohemian Rhapsody, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Labyrinth, Moulin Rouge, A Star is Born, Mary Poppins Returns and a surprise screening which will be announced soon.
The Open Air Cinema Museum is set under the stars among the stunning romantic ruins of the Abbey’s award winning gardens, popular blockbuster movies, some cult classics and family favourites will be screened over nine nights. Find out more www.torre-abbey.org.uk
