The centuries old tradition of a shout auction at Brixham market has come to an end as it moves online.
Visitors to Brixham Fish Market will no longer get to hear the dulcet tones of the fishmongers and auctioneers calling out the prices of that day’s catch, while a centuries old way of selling the fish, the future of the market relies on people attending to buy the fish and it is hoped that by moving to an online system, more people can be reached.
Everyone who works at the market reflected on the last ever shout auction, saying it was the end of an era and that it was a sad day, but that they hoped that the new system would attract more people.
The new online auction is now live and will be introduced by an auctioneer controlling a digital clock. Shoppers will then be able to bid on and buy fish by using keyboard commands.
Have you ever been to the fish market and experienced a ‘shout’ auction? We’d love to hear your stories!
