There are so many things to do in Devon, you’ll never have the time to do them all, but that just gives you an excuse to keep coming back! Devon is the UK’s third largest county and as such as a hugely diverse landscape making it a haven for nature lovers, city dwellers and those with sea legs.
We want you to be able to see the very best of Devon, while giving you chance to explore at your own pace, so we’ve put together five of our favourite walking routes around the county for you to check out while you’re in the area.
Have you got suggestions of great walking routes? Let us know, you can get in touch with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!
The Dartmoor National Park is full of interesting walking and cycling trails, as well as wild ponies, plenty of wildlife and the chance to see some historical monuments. One of the moor’s highlights are the granite tors and a great way to see them is to follow a circular walking tour, where you can visit them all and spend time at each one. There are several such walks you can do at various different lengths, so depending on how long you want to be out for and how far you want to walk, there are options for you.
The Jurassic Coastline in the south east of Devon is an incredible site to see, fossil hunters particularly enjoy the walks available along this stretch of coast, but the route along the South West Coast path starting at Sidmouth and going to nearby Beer will take you through an area of outstanding natural beauty. Plus, the height of the trail will give you an amazing view of the area.
Another popular coastal walk can be found in the north of Devon taking in sandy beaches, open sea views and more. Croyde Bay is one of Devon’s most beautiful and popular beaches, especially for those of you into water sports, so head down there to watch the surfers before heading off to Baggy Point and then following the trail to Woolacombe Beach.

The 800-acres that surrounds Dartington Hall is a great destination for walkers. You’ll find incredible gardens, footpaths, forests, rivers and just about every other outdoor scene you can think of. The whole walk around the entire estate is about 8 miles, so it is a pretty meaty walk. Plus, there is the hall, the shops and the café on site for you to enjoy during the day.
If you want a great mix of walks that takes in rivers, coastal views, greenery and the chance to spot wildlife, head to Watersmeet which can be found on the Exmoor National Park. There are connections to the South Coast Path, as well as trails all over Exmoor which start and finish at this point.
