Bike Week has returned for another year, this annual celebration showcases cycling in its many forms and aims to inspire people all over the UK to give cycling a try. So, whether you’ve been riding your bike for years or you’ve only just taken off your stabilisers, here are some great locations for cycling around Devon.
There are loads of cycling routes in Devon, but we thought we’d pick out our favourite family friendly cycling routes that are mainly traffic free. That way you can use Bike Week to introduce your whole family to cycling and take in some beautiful Devon countryside at the same time!
This is a 7 mile off road cycle path following the route of a now disused railway. You can pick it up at anywhere along the trail, but if you want to do start to finish, head to the National Trust car park at Plymbridge Woods and follow it through Dartmoor.
This route is almost completely free of traffic and being level makes it an ideal route for beginners or those that are less confident on two wheels. It starts off in the heart of Exeter before joining the Exe Estuary Trail, which you’ll find on the National Cycle Network. The route takes in coastal towns, nature reserves and more. It’s a fairly long route, so make sure to take refreshments!
We thought it was too obvious to start with the most famous one! This route is perfect for those cycling with children, it follows disused rail lines and the Braunton to Meeth section is all off road. It is an incredibly long route measuring 32 miles in total but you can pick it up at various points so don’t feel pressured to do the whole thing!
Linking Okehampton to Lydford, this 11 mile route takes in a castle, a dam, a viaduct and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of some steam trains!
Haldon Forest can be found just outside Exeter and has some great trails around the site that are perfect for cycling with the family. Their Discovery Trail is a good place for young cyclists or those who aren’t quite confident yet, it has regular resting points and stunning views as well as being made to Access for All standards, so is suitable for wheelchairs and other mobility aids too. If you’re in need of something more challenging, they also have the Spicers Trail which has some different gradients and terrains to try out and the Ridge Ride is perfect for those who are more experienced.
Are you taking part in Bike Week? Make sure to grab your bike, your helmet and find the perfect route between 8th and 16th June to take part.
