Cliff Railway Day, which was created by a small team in Devon, is now a national event with Cliff Railways all over the country taking part to introduce the public to the wonders of the nation’s cliff railway heritage. As the event grows year on year, the celebrations also get bigger with more and more being offered by the nation’s cliff railways. For the cliff railway in Babbacombe, visitors were given the chance to travel the line as many times as they liked free of charge!
The team at Babbacombe Cliff Railway, decided to combine the day with their own celebrations marking the tenth anniversary of the site being under community ownership. The celebrations included free travel for everyone all day, and the team were amazed by how many people turned up to give the cliff railway a go. Nicky Allen, Babbacombe Cliff Railway’s marketing manager, said: “2019 is the tenth anniversary of the community ownership of Babbacombe Cliff Railway, we’re celebrating this in many ways and a day of free travel seemed an excellent idea to put into the mix. It gives us the chance to show our appreciation for all those who travel with us by giving them a free day and also, should anyone have not travelled with us before, the chance to give it a try.”
From 9am until 5pm on Saturday, 11th May, the railway ran free trips from Babbacombe Downs to Oddicombe Beach with no restrictions on how many trips visitors made.
Speaking on their blog, Babbacombe Cliff said: “This is genuinely a real wow moment.” During the day, 4,571 trips were made along the line leaving the whole team stunned. They said: “We’ve been counting you all on and off our carriages today and we’re pretty overwhelmed… We thought you’d like our travel for free offer and we thought that we’d managed to spread the word pretty well, but even so! We have had a truly lovely day, stunning sunshine and hoards of fabulous, friendly people travelling with us.”
Look out for more events from Babbacombe Cliff Railway in the coming months as summer comes around and be sure to add Cliff Railway Day to your diaries for next year as it promises to be bigger and better than ever!
