Plymouth’s Pirate Weekend is returning to the ocean city this May in a swashbuckling display of pirates, parrots and parties!
With its rich maritime history, it is no surprise that Plymouth was once home to several pirates and privateers, in fact, the richest pirate ever set sail from Plymouth!
‘Black Sam’, as he was known was born in Dartmoor and moved to Plymouth where he joined the Royal Navy but end up being a member of the infamous Flying Gang, sailing alongside the likes of Blackbeard before captaining his own ship. He was known as the Robin Hood of the Sea and rumour has it that he often returned captured ships and cargo if they didn’t suit his needs – pretty polite for a pirate!
With infamous names like that regularly appearing at Plymouth’s docks during the time of pirating and privateering, it makes perfect sense to celebrate this part of Plymouth’s heritage.
This year’s Pirate Weekend takes place on 11th and 12th May around the Barbican and Sutton Harbour. Visitors will find plenty to do, including the annual Pirate Parade, puppeteers, stilt walkers, storytellers and shanty bands, as well as two tall ships docked in the harbour for you to explore. Visitors will also want to look out for some well known pirates wondering the streets and of course, a mermaid or two!
