Easter proved just how lovely the weather can be in Spring (we’ll just ignore the weather immediately after the bank holiday for now…!) and in light of this, we thought we’d put together a list of our favourite spots to indulge in a picnic. Because what could be better than spending some time in Devon’s glorious scenery with some good food and good company?
This is a truly fascinating place to go if you’re visiting the south Devon coast. You’ll find it near Salcombe and like it’s neighbour is a popular place for families, particularly in the sunnier months. For the parents, you’ll find one of Devon’s oldest inns (which is still a working pub!) and for the kids, there is the chance to catch the sea tractor over to Burgh Island. The water at Bigbury on Sea is shallow, so you don’t have to worry too much about getting wet and the golden sand makes a nice spot for laying a blanket and enjoying your sandwiches.
Staying in South Devon for a moment, Cockington, on the outskirts of Torquay is a beautiful place to visit. It is known as a chocolate box village and is full of thatched cottages, as well as cobbled streets and other historic buildings. There is a manor house in the centre of the village surrounded by acres of grass, perfect for stopping for a little rest and refreshment while you’re exploring.
This beach near Barnstaple is a bit more sheltered than most of the beaches at this end of Devon, giving you the ideal spot to sit and soak up the weather and the beauty of the area without having to worry too much about being out in the open for long periods of time. Of course, do always drink plenty of water and stock up on the sun cream, regardless of how shaded you are! Instow beach is said to be the perfect place to see the sunset, so make sure to head down there towards the end of the day, especially if you’re on a romantic trip to the coast!
The Grand Western Canal at Tiverton is an area that has lots of great things to see and do. Aside from exploring via the horse drawn barge, traversing the canal walk ways and visiting one of the boat hire companies along the canal, there are also patches of grassland with picnic benches that overlook the more picturesque areas of the canal. Why not pack a picnic with you when you visit and make use of the scenery for an alfresco dinner?
We can’t not mention Plymouth Hoe, this is one of the most amazing picnic spots in the whole of Devon. You’ll find it just a short walk from the city centre, right next to the Smeaton’s Tower Lighthouse – which is also a great spot for Instagram photos too – from this spot you’ll see lots of marine life and some stunning views.
