As the weather brightens and the water starts to look a bit more inviting, why not head to Devon and take on the water with one of the amazing water sports on offer in the region?
Water sports, particularly surfing are a big draw to Devon during the summer, so if you’re someone that has never tried it before or an old pro with experienced sea legs, we’ve put together our list of great water sports that you can do while in the region.
This is a great water-based activity that is perfect for those of you who want some alone time and those who are looking for something to do in a group – you could always set a challenge and see who is the best sailor! Kayaking is an activity that is offered at various locations around Devon, with some organisations offering guided trips to some of Devon’s more secluded beaches and coves, while others just let you hire your equipment and amuse yourself!
We know we’ve already mentioned surfing, but the north and south coasts are perfect for anyone wanting to give it a try or those of you who really want to challenge yourself. There are surf schools and instructors, as well as places to rent equipment if you don’t have your own all over the coast. Head to North Devon if you’ve got a bit of experience under your belt and South Devon if you want to test your balance on some calmer waters first.
Sailing is a great activity that all the family can get involved with. In Plymouth you can visit the award-winning Mayflower Marina where there are a whole host of boats for you to ogle over. You can also set sail from Torquay or if you fancy heading out on a calmer lake first, you can hire a boat and explore the waterways of Tiverton, Roadford Lake or Tavistock.
Canoeing is another activity which is perfect for groups, families, couples or just those who want to spend a few peaceful hours on their own out in the water. Like surfing and sailing, there are canoe hire businesses and instructors dotted all around the county.
Yes, you can hire jet skis and yes you can have an adrenaline filled experience zooming around the waves! If you’re up for getting the blood pumping, take a look at some of the coastal resorts offering jet ski lessons and hire.
Want to cause a splash, but not to sure about surfing or boating? You’re in luck, there are loads of water adventure activity centres around Devon, where you can climb over inflatables, fight each other with foam noodles and race each other around a water assault course.
