Blessed with gorgeous sandy beaches, winding clifftop paths and beautiful National Parks, it’s easy to see why Devon is a camping holiday favourite. Grown-ups and kids alike love this corner of England, but they’re not the only ones. Dogs simply can’t get enough of all those wide-open spaces and beautiful sandy beaches, which make Devon the paw-fect place for thrill-seeking pooches.
There are so many reasons to take your four-legged friend camping in Devon. Many beaches are dog-friendly, and there are miles of winding footpaths where pets can roam free and romp for joy. There are plenty of dog-friendly attractions too, not to mention cafes, pubs and restaurants.
Best of all, dogs camp for free on all Camping and Caravanning Club Sites and many of our locations have designated on-site dog walks, too. If you’re considering a camping holiday in Devon with your pet this summer, take a look at our six dog-friendly Club Sites for ideas and inspiration:
Based near Kingsbridge in South Devon, Slapton Sands Club Site boasts lovely sea views in a quiet rural setting. Dog-friendly Slapton beach is a few minutes’ walk from the campsite and the village of Slapton is home to two fantastic pubs, both of which serve delicious homemade food and welcome four-legged friends.
There’s so much to see and do in Dartmouth. It’s a beautiful hillside town overlooking the River Dart with many walks and dog-friendly attractions nearby. For instance, explore Dartmouth Castle, visit the holiday home of Agatha Christie at Greenway (dogs are permitted in the garden), or head over the water to Kingswear and enjoy the scenic 2.4 mile walk to The Daymark. You can even take your four-legged friend for a jaunt on the South Devon Railway.
Love walking? This part of Devon is the perfect place to pack up a picnic and head out for a day’s hike. Based in Exmoor National Park, take your pick from the South West Coast Path, Two Moors Way, Tarka Trail and Samaritans Way. Or head to Watersmeet, one of Britain’s deepest river gorges, which boasts spectacular scenery and over 40 miles of footpaths.
Sitting pretty in the countryside, California Cross is close to Dartmoor National Park and perfect for long scenic walks. One of the best local beaches is Bigbury-On-Sea, home to a huge expanse of sand that’s great fun for two and four-legged family members. For year-round access with your pooch, head east of Sedgewell Cove or stay west of the causeway.
Situated in Dartmoor National Park, lovely Tavistock is perfect for adventure-loving families. Nearby Plymbridge Woods is a superb place to start exploring the local Dartmoor landscapes, and Lydford is well worth a visit, with its sturdy centuries-old fort (dogs on leads welcome) and the fabulous Lydford Gorge, a spectacular spot with rocky walkways, woodland and waterfalls. Our Tavistock Club Site has two large enclosed dog walks on site too.
Lovely Umberleigh is based in a rural location with lovely views over the surrounding countryside, and its own on-site dog walk. Nearby Westward Ho! offers a superb beach, parts of which are open to dogs during the summer season, while Saunton Sands is a cracking stretch of sand backed by the impressive Braunton Burrows UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (dogs on leads are welcome here).
Whichever corner of Devon takes your fancy, with so many outdoor adventures on your doorstep you’ll never be short of things to see and do. All of our Club Sites are well-positioned in quiet areas with good transport links, spacious pitches, excellent facilities and friendly on-site staff, to help you enjoy every moment of your precious time away. Best of all, dog’s camp for free on all of our Club Sites, which means there’s really no reason to leave your four-legged friend at home.
