The traditional Devon Cream Tea has found itself the subject of a health probe in the news recently after the Food Standards Agency released a warning about the sugar content of the scones.
While the cream tea debate usually surrounds whether jam or cream goes first (it’s cream.), now the debate is what kind of scones are healthier.
The Agency carried out a survey of scones and found that there were huge variations in the sugar content and the amount of fat and calories. Some of the scones that were looked at contained up to ten cubes of sugar.
Once the traditional cream and jam are added, they can total over 1,000 calories, which is half the daily recommended amount.
The survey is part of a wider Know Your Calories campaign which aims to inform the public of their recommended daily calorie intake and to offer advice on where to find calorie information when out and about. It found that a traditional fruit scone can have as much sugar as a can of Coke.
