Reasons to visit Mid-Devon

Often overlooked by the coastal areas, mid Devon is a real gem in the heart of this magnificent county. There are plenty of things to see and do and of course, being in the middle of the county means you are central to just about everything! We’ve put together a list of our top reasons why you should visit Mid-Devon!
The food

Mid-Devon is rife with rich agricultural land and as such, the local produce that comes from this region is second to none. Not only do the restaurants, cafes and hotels like to promote local businesses and cut their carbon footprint by featuring local produce on their menus, but there are also an array of vineyards, bakeries and food events, including farmers’ markets taking place all the time allowing you to really experience how good Devon tastes.
The scenery

The mid-Devon area has a little of everything, there are rolling hills, woodlands, rivers, valleys… It is the place to go for a country retreat and is perfect for anyone looking for a relaxing break, especially with the number of tranquil locations and the abundance of wildlife that lives here. The region is also the ideal destination for anyone who enjoys walking and getting back into nature, it is teeming with walking trails and gives you easy access to Dartmoor and Exmoor!

Mid Devon is the home of the UK’s last remaining horse drawn barge and if that isn’t enough to pique your interest, this is just one of the activities offered by the team at the Tiverton Canal Company which also gives you the opportunity to go canoeing or boating and has a canal barge bar!
One of Devon’s cities, Exeter, can be found in Mid-Devon and has a whole host of interesting places to visit, including a selection of underground tunnels which you can explore as part of a guided tour.
The National Trust manage a few properties in this area and Tiverton Castle also offers an interesting place to visit and even stay!

As well as the abundance of heritage attractions, the region itself is a hive of interesting historical information. There are historic country estates like Knightshayes, Fursdon House and Downe House which help give an idea of what life was like in the region and Tiverton’s Museum of Mid Devon Life and Bampton Heritage Centre help you immerse yourself further. If that wasn’t enough, Mid-Devon has links to St Boniface, who is the patron saint of Crediton!
