We’d like to introduce you to a very special Visit Devon contributor, Dilys, who is keen to tell you all about the very best dog friendly places you can visit while in Devon. Dilys has been all over Devon, but recently she has spent a fair bit of time exploring the local beaches now that the restrictions are being lifted.
Over the next few months, Dilys will be sharing her experiences with us at Visit Devon as she figures out which are the very best places in the county for dogs!
One beach area that she recommends is Preston Sands which she explored last week with her owners.
Located in South Devon, neighbouring Paignton, Preston Sands is a great beach to visit at this time of year with dogs. Not only are dogs free to explore the beach area where they can dig in the sand to their heart’s content but there is also a green space behind the beach huts that is perfect for running around and getting the sand out of the fur. The sand digging was Dilys’ favourite bit. Apparently Preston Sands has good sand for digging!
Dilys noted that the area is great for families with young children as there is a children’s play park located right by the greenery and the beach huts so parents can exercise both dogs and children at the same time!
Preston doesn’t just have the beach going for it, it is a hive for walkers. There are a number of great foot paths that take you along the cliff tops to Hollicombe Beach which has some amazing views and really helps work up an appetite, so it’s just as well that Preston Sands’ sea front is home to two ice cream huts selling hot and soft drinks. Dilys got the best deal though, the beach huts supply free water for dogs!
The little shops also sell buckets and spades for the owners that want to join in with the digging or for exploring the rock pools when the tide is out, this area of Devon is perfect for crabbing and learning more about the region’s native species. Rock pools are one of Dilys’ favourite places to explore and these ones did not disappoint!
Preston Sands gets a solid four out of five barks from Dilys!
Look out for her next adventure coming soon!
