While the colder weather may not be the best for everyday life, it is perfect for large warming dinners, decadent desserts covered in cream and fruity ciders and luckily for you, we’re here with our list of Devon’s best treats, so get comfy and start planning your next meal around these dishes.
Obviously no list of famous Devon treats would be complete without mentioning Clotted Cream.
Whether you have it with a cream tea or on top of a warm apple cake, clotted cream is the ultimate indulgence. Plus, the cooler weather is perfect for tea drinking, so make sure to have as many cream teas as you can! Just remember to put the cream before the jam. It’s the law.
Next up, fresh seafood.
Being on the coast, you would expect there to be an abundance of sea food on offer in Devon. If you’re in the south of the county, head to Brixham for some of the freshest dish and shellfish in the UK and if you’re in the north, base yourself somewhere like Ilfracombe. Grab potentially the best fish and chips in the south west or pick up something more refined like lobster or scallops.
Fill up with a pasty
Yes, you read that right. Pasties. While our neighbours over the borders might lay claim to the pasty, they were actually invented in Devon. These days, Devon Pasties are shaped differently to the Cornish variety, so they you can tell them apart. Vegetarians and vegans need not feel left out when it comes to these popular treats as many bakeries offer a variety of flavours and free from versions.
Wash it down with cider.
You’re in the West Country, cider is an absolute must. Devon has perfect apple growing conditions so you’ll find the finest ciders in the country in a variety of flavours and textures from still, sparkling, fruit, rough and more. The pubs, bars and restaurants in the county will all serve locally produced cider but if you’re a real cider fan take a tour of one of the breweries and find out more about how your favourite drink is made and sample some of the more unusual flavours.
Devon knows how they make it so creamy…
We’ve already covered clotted cream, but Devon’s most commercially famous product is custard. Ambrosia’s tagline is famous and their custards and rice puddings have been produced in Devon for years.
So, there you have it.
Draw your curtains against the cold weather, settle down somewhere warm and tuck in to a tasty Devonshire treat!
