Whether you’re a fan of Valentine’s Day or not, we all need a bit of romance in our lives now and again, whether you think of romance as being sprawling countryside outside of an intimate cottage retreat or listening to waves crash into the shore from a deck chair, here are a few suggestions for things to do with your loved one when in Devon.
Devon is known for its amazing scenery, its dramatic coastlines and its abundance of luxury accommodation, so you are a bit spoilt for choice, but we hope this can whittle it down so you can plan an amazing Valentine’s trip.

If nostalgia makes you feel romantic, then why not try a traditional dinner date? The South Devon Railway has steam trains available for you to ride and offers dining experiences as you chug through beautiful countryside. Who doesn’t want a romantic dinner for two combined with the excitement of a steam train and the beautiful views of the Devon countryside? It can make you feel like you’re in a romance novel, so it’s perfect for fans of black and white movies and period dramas. You can top off the trip by staying at Knowle Farm, hidden away within 44 acres of countryside, plus the cottages have wood burning fires so you can live out any Austen-esque fantasies. For the true Darcy experience, book yourself on a Winding River Canoe trip and make sure at least one of you is wearing a white shirt you don’t mind ruining.
Devon is full of luxury hotels, some of them have spas and other facilities included. One of the most isolated luxury hotels is located on Burgh Island and offers breath-taking views across Bantham Beach. Another option is Bovey Castle, where you can experience history, excitement, glamour and adventure all within a 275-acre estate on the Dartmoor National Park. Choose between a room or one of the 22 lodges, play some golf, choose from their restaurants or spend some time in the spa, you’ll be well and truly spoiled by the end of your stay. If you want to include exploring the city of Plymouth as part of your trip, Boringdon Hall Hotel and Spa is a good shout. It’s a 5-star luxury manor house, including fine dining and a traditional Devon afternoon tea experience. You can treat yourself to a wide range of spa facilities or if you’re a couple that like to train together, they have a state-of-the-art gym on site. If you want sea side and a setting that will make you think you’re somewhere far away, stay at the Cary Arms and Spa. This hotel has all the personality and values of a traditional English inn and the luxurious style and facilities of a boutique hotel, this offers a relaxed and modern getaway. You’ll overlook Babbacombe so you can visit the model village.
