The Friends of Clennon Lakes in Paignton have received funding from the wildlife trust that runs Paignton Zoo to build an artificial breeding bank to attract kingfishers back to the area. The Friends group was set up a few years ago to restore the nature reserve which had fallen into disrepair, the lakes and the immediate area are a designated County Wildlife Site, but lack of management had seen the lakes silting up and the footpaths becoming overgrown.
Kingfishers have been spotted in the area before, but it is rare to see them there. The Devon Wildlife Trust have said that Kingfishers can be seen all year around on river banks. They are most likely to be seen sitting in low hanging branches over water and breed near lowland watercourses.
The Friends have started off the year by cutting and clearing the overgrown vegetation before they can start on the building of the breeding bank. The project is expected to last a few months. They are in the process of recruiting any volunteers who might want to help them with the clearing and construction, they meet on the first Sunday of each month at the Friends of Clennon Lakes’ storage container if you would like to join them.
