What better place to celebrate talk like a Pirate Day than in the place where so much piracy and some of the world’s most famous pirates visited? You’ll find plenty of pirate history if you head towards Plymouth where there is the maritime museum, but it wasn’t just there that you’ll find evidence of Devon’s history with piracy. Devon was one of the targets for fearsome Barbary pirates for around three centuries, so you’ll find out plenty about pirates on your visit!
Why not head to Shaldon, where you’ll find the smuggler’s tunnel which leads through to Ness Cove Beach, the tunnel is hidden behind Shaldon Zoo and descends right through the rock face, transporting you right into a scene from Pirates at the Caribbean.
Ness Cove Beach is a small, hidden beach and is one of Devon’s most secluded and picturesque spots, it is completely enclosed by the shelter of the surrounding cliffs and is pretty much only accessible by the tunnel, which, it is said, was originally used by pirates and smugglers.
If you want to find out more concrete facts about pirates, take a trip to North Devon and visit the Maritime Museum in Apledore, where you’ll find whole exhibits dedicated to pirates and their history in Devon.
Brixham hosts their own Brixham Pirate Festival every year, Brixham, like many other coastal places was a hot bed for pirates and smugglers and this rich history is celebrated with parades and parties.
