If you like dining alfresco, you’re going to love these picturesque picnic spots.
1. Roadford Lake
Not only is this a pretty place to eat your dinner, but Roadford Lake is a must visit attraction if you happen to be in Devon. Aside from the nature and the stunning views the grounds offer, there are also a whole host of activities available for all the family, including kayaking, paddle boarding and more! There is even a camping ground if you wanted to sleep outside too. Alternatively, the Arundell Arms is only a few miles away and is a cosy and popular place to socialise and stay.
2. Lydford Gorge
If you’re hoping to get a few snaps for your Instagram profile over dinner, then Lydford Gorge is the place to be. There are a number of walks for you to explore the whole gorge and there is the 30m Whitelady Waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron to entice you too. From here, you could always head to Tree Surfers to work off your lunch, or perhaps, let the kids blow off some steam! For those staying over, Kirkside Barn is located nearby and has stunning views and plenty of wildlife. Lee Byre is also nearby and is an award-winning bed and breakfast, so you can be sure of a good breakfast before your picnic adventure.
3. Beer Head
If you don’t mind the climb, stopping for a picnic on Beer Head will give you an amazing view over the town and its sandy beach, plus its on the Jurassic Coast so you’ll have miles of stunning coastline to greet you while you eat your sandwiches. Once you’re done, you can explore Beer Quarry Caves, where you can do tours and find out more about quarrying from the Roman times or visit the Seaton Tramway for a fun trip around Seaton where you’ll get to see panoramic views of the Estuary. Jean Bartlett Cottage Holiday are in the vicinity giving you a choice of amazing cottages to stay in. Or you could head to Higher Wiscombe which is just a short journey from the South West Coast Path and the AONB, so you can have lots of great walks and picnic opportunities.
4. Clovelly
Clovelly is a picturesque fishing village with beautiful side streets and a lovely harbour for you to stop and take in your surroundings with a sandwich or two. You’re in the right place to enjoy the Milky Way Adventure Park, an all-weather family adventure park which won Trip Advisor’s Travellers’ Choice Award two years running. There are lots of great places to stay in and around Clovelly, including Hartland Quay Hotel, which sits right on the unspoilt North Devon coastline and Westward Living, which is in the neighbouring Westward Ho!
5. Plymouth Hoe
Plymouth is a big, bustling city, so you can be sure of having plenty to do while you’re visiting, but it also features a pretty harbour and some pretty amazing picnic spots, including Devil’s Point, which is one of the best places to get a wonderful panoramic view. While you’re in the city, you can visit the National Marine Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the UK and of course, the adults in the group will love an excuse to head to Plymouth Gin. There are lots of places to stay in the city too, including Rooms by Bistrot Pierre offering stylist and relaxing breaks and the Jurys Inn Plymouth, which can be found right in the centre of the city.
