It isn’t just for rest and relaxation that people travel to Devon, the county is also famous for its amazing coastlines, perfect for surfing and other water sports, so if you’re in the market to learn a new skill or perhaps to show off your sporting prowess, why not check out some of the water sport attractions on offer?
Westward Ho! Beach | North Devon
Surfing is a big draw to visitors coming to Devon, especially when you head to the north of the county where you can find Croyde Bay, Woolacombe and Saunton Sands. To the south, Bantham is a great beach, or go to Putsborough Beach if you’re just starting out, it’s a great spot for when it’s too windy or rough elsewhere.
You’ll find surf schools all across the region for anyone wanting to give it a go, it isn’t just beginners that are catered for, groups that fancy a bit of instruction, equipment hire or a chance to experience different conditions can all find sessions to suit them.
Living Coasts | Torquay
Naturally, there are plenty of opportunities for swimming in the sea and the rivers and estuaries in the county. Many of the hotels and other accommodation sites also have swimming pools and leisure spas for you to enjoy. As well as swimming, you could also try your hand at diving. You could do this in around the coast, but one very exciting place to don a snorkel is at Living Coasts in Torquay. While you’re there, you can also visit Torquay’s Dinosaur World and the Babbacombe Model Village both of which are great fun for all the family. Visitors to Torquay have a wide range of accommodation sites, like Haytor Hotel, an award-winning elegant detached Victorian Villa. Frognel Hall is another Victorian property, originally a mansion it has been redeveloped into a beautiful place to stay. Or if you wanted a bit of pampering after your activities, staying at the Headland Hotel and Spa will give you access to a whole host of relaxing treatments.
Roadford Lake | Lifton
If you’re interested in being on the water but want to feel more secure than you would on a surf board, you could always give sailing ago, in which case, Roadford Lake is a good place to go. Situated in the Wolf Valley, the whole family can enjoy water sports and other adventure activities, and they have accommodation, so you can stay on site. Alternatively. Visitors to Roadford Lake could stay at the Arundell Arms Hotel and Restaurant which is nearby and has twenty miles of exclusive fishing rights, keeping your trip in theme. Canoe Tamar is another great option for anyone who is interested in sailing or kayaking. Plus, you’re close to Tamar Trails and Tree Surfers if you want to have a few land adventures too. You could also stop by Pentillie Castle, where you can dine, stay and enjoy some of the activities on offer. Otherwise, Harford Bridge Holiday Park in the Dartmoor National Park, is only a few miles away and offers some amazing views.
